Arts Organizing to Win Social Change

(This Workshop is for everyone (including non-artists and non-performers) interested in using creative techniques to tell our stories to win change, amplify our messages, involve lots of people and have an impact. Sponsored by the Peace and Justice Center of Nevada County and Earth Justice Ministries.

Noon to 1:30 PM: IMAGES AND STORIES OF EFFECTIVE ARTS ORGANIZING: Including Peoples Climate March, 1999 WTO in Seattle, Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Standing Rock, and Idle No More, SF Bay. David will show images and stories of how the campaigns and mobilizations used arts organizing to win.

1:30 to 3 PM: ARTS-MAKING TECHNIQUES: Discussion of some creative art-making techniques and materials of public street events, including setting up participatory art builds: flags/banners, puppets and cardboard sculpting, creative cardboard rain-proof signs, simple street theater/movement recipes.

3 to 6 PM: ARTS MAKING: We will create some art which can be used in up-coming activist campaigns, so everyone will have the experience and see start-to-finish techniques.
* David Solnit is mass nonviolent direct action organizer who is 350.org’s North American Arts Organizer. He works with a wide range of movements, communities and groups. He is the author-editor of “Globalize Liberation; How to uproot the System and Build a Better World’ and author of ‘The Battle of the Story of the Battle of Seattle’.
